MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Security guards from Skets Project, a security firm, voiced their unhappiness about being "paid salaries late", by staging a protest in front of the gate at the Bland Street entrance to the harbour in Mossel Bay today.
The security guards were assisted by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party.
A spokesperson for the guards, Sindiswa Damoyi, told Mossel Bay Advertiser they are unhappy about "late payment of salaries, a provident fund that isn't paid, unfair dismissals and leave that is not paid".
The EFF labour desk's Ishmael Lethoko said Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA ) allegedly gave a tender for security work to Skets and that was the reason for them demonstrating in front of the TNPA gate.
"These people are sub-contracted by Skets. Skets aren't giving them pay slips. We went to their offices and when the workers raised the issue of payment they chased them away."
Lethoko said the employees of Skets asked the EFF to assist them. "We came here to ask the port if they were aware of the issues. And if they were aware of them, why are they were still giving the tender to Skets."
The Advertiser asked Skets and TNPA for comment and is still awaiting comment.
