MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Three seasoned musicians, Liesl Jobson (a bassoon, contrabassoon and flute player), Normal Carless (a flute and trumpet player) and Elsabe Barkhuizen (a pianist), will take to the stage with a recital, Solstice Reflections, in the Garden Route from Thursday to Sunday, 18 to 21 June, beginning in Mossel Bay at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum.
Liesl Jobson
Jobson, who is also a writer and photographer, is said to perform “the poetry of music and play the music of poems” during the upcoming recital.
Her growth as a musician stems from her time as bassoonist and contrabassoonist in the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a flute and piccolo player in the Soweto Police Band.
Her poems, stories and essays have appeared in various journals and anthologies. She has performed her work at literary festivals in South Africa, Ireland, Italy and is headed to Greece later this year.
Her collection of prose poems and flash fiction, 100 Papers, won the Ernst van Heerden Award and was translated into Italian. Jobson also hosts the Avbob Poetry Online Workshops and coaches novice rowing.
Norman Carless
Carless has a long history with military bands and orchestras, and was the bandmaster for the South African Navy before his retirement.
He is a multi-instrumentalist, as well as the co-founder, conductor, orchestrator and music arranger of Carpe Musicam!, the biggest music entity in the Garden Route, which includes the Concert Orchestra, Choir, Pops Band and several smaller ensembles.
Elsabe Barkhuizen
An accomplished organist and pianist who has been playing professionally since the age of 12, Barkhuizen was the previous director of music for the Dutch Reformed Church in George, and is the co-founder and resident pianist, organist, choir leader and manager of Carpe Musicam!.
The recital dates are as follows:
• Bartolomeu Dias Museum, Mossel Bay - Thursday 18 June at 18:00.
• Attic Atelier, George - Friday 19 June at 18:00.
• In Toto Retreat, Sedgefield - Friday 20 June at 19:00.
• Dutch Reformed Church, Sedgefield - Sunday 21 June at 15:00.
