MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A group of individuals sharing a strong sense of community, having grown up in Mossel Bay, have taken their desire to provide more support to those living in disadvantaged areas to a higher level.
They have launched the Mossel Bay Youth and Community Development Action Group (MYCDAG), a registered non-profit organisation based in Tarka.
MYCDAG aims to establish programmes that will address the unemployment of youth in the community through training as well as entrepreneurship support.
These will be implemented through the local government programmes as well as internship opportunities in partnership with local business.
The newly-founded organisation also intends to assist the frail and elderly in the community through various initiatives.

The first project MYCDAG was involved in was a clean-up of illegally dumped items. This will be an ongoing initiative to improve residential areas, whilst raising awareness of refuse management.
"We also aim to start a small scale recycling project where all recyclables can be brought to a central point, instead of the dumping of reusable objects and items," says Shamley Titus of MYCDAG.
On Saturday, 7 July MYCDAG hosted the launch. Various speakers and groups were invited to attend as MYCDAG wanted to get the local community to know of its existence and what role the organisation intends to play in the communities in and around Mossel Bay. Speakers included Dirk Kotzé, the deputy mayor of Mossel Bay, Bronwrick Benjamin, Nico Ground, representatives from the South African Gospel Mission, Omgee Rehab and God's Creation.
During the launch the youngsters played a netball match.
The Sarafina Dance Group from KwaNonqaba as well as youth from Omgee Rehab performed at the event.
A personal testimony was delivered by Quinton Windvogel, who encouraged the youngsters to stay away from drugs and alcohol. He urged them to live a fruitful and meaningful life.
After the speeches, the youngsters played netball and afterwards, enjoyed eats and drinks supplied by MYCDAG.
"We call upon the community to support us in this effort to uplift the community." For more information contact Gert Christie (060 707 0848) or Samuel Kleinsmith (071 467 3841).
