MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Roadworks on the R102 between Great Brak River and the Monte Christo intersection have been severely affected by the heavy rains on Sunday, 29 September.

Head of communication at the Department of Transport and Public Works, Jandré Bakker, says a major pipeline and other stormwater structures under construction have been damaged.

Bakker says there is a danger the road will subside in places. "For safety reasons, the R102 between Fraaiuitsig and Tergniet will be closed until these structures have been rebuilt." 

Traffic is being diverted along Impala Road. Remedial work will also be required in many areas, especially between Monte Christo and Little Brak River, as well as Fraaiuitsig and Tergniet.

Bakker says, due to the complex traffic management already in place, the only option available was to close off the entire section of the R102 between Fraaiuitsig and Tergniet until reconstruction of the storm water pipeline is completed.

"Roadworks are strongly affected by prevailing weather conditions, and the severity of Sunday's storm could not have been predicted. The contractor will complete the reconstruction works as soon as possible so that this section of the R102 can be reopened to traffic."
