With the theme 'My world, your world, our world - free of elder abuse', some 300 seniors citizens from the greater Mossel Bay area gathered at the Mossel Bay Town Hall, wearing purple in support of this worthy cause.
Despite the cold, a cheerful atmosphere was tangible as the guests tucked into hearty soup and snacks, sharing stories. A programme was presented to illustrate the reality surrounding the abuse of elderly people, which is a growing problem in South Africa, with the number of senior citizens within communities increasing as more people grow older due to the advancement of medical science.
There were many memorable moments during the programme, which included a candle memorial by Councillor Venolea Fortuin and the ACVV Kenani choir, that never fails to shine during their performances. The talented Brandon Pheiffers entertained the audience with his lyrical voice and a hard-hitting poem, voicing the hurt of the elderly, was presented. An insightful and eye-opening talk was given on substance abuse amongst the elderly.
The members of HEAL (Help Elder Abuse Line) presented a harrowing role-play where the shocking and dreadful reality of elderly abuse was re-enacted.
The protection of older persons and those with special needs were also addressed during the programme. Although not present at the event, various businesses and organisations in Mossel Bay pledged their support to WEAAD by wearing purple on the day.
