MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At its monthly meeting on Thursday, 22 February, the Mossel Bay town council noted the decision to continue with surveys of the landslide-affected areas of Botha and Nicolaai streets in Great Brak River, as well as the Seemeeuvlug, Tuscan Village and Rylaan 2 areas in Hartenbos.
These surveys are to determine the current magnitude of the occurrence of landslides, and the possible effect on municipal services.
The unstable section of Rylaan 2 will be permanently barricaded once the houses within the high risk area have been demolished.
Funding was approved for the department of technical services and town planning and integrated services to complete the survey work necessary.
The cost of remedial work necessary in the Seemeeuvlug area amounts to approximately R2.2m, and in the Nicolaai Street and Botha Street areas to almost R1.3m.
The director of town planning and integrated services will further explore the possibility that the Department of Human Settlements assist the affected residents of Nicolaai and Botha streets with housing.
A feedback meeting will be arranged with the residents of the affected areas after the completion of the landslide surveys.
