MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As part of civic-minded initiatives run by the Department of Correctional Service, officials from the Mossel Bay Correctional facility and Community Corrections identified a house in Great Brak River which needed attention.
The house is occupied by two elderly women, of which the one is wheelchair bound, as well as an unemployed youth.
The house was not conducive for comfortable living, and had no toilet facilities. There were 21 broken windows, dilapidated flooring, and old, worn out furniture. The interior and exterior needed a coat of paint desperately.
The members of Correctional Services collected funds among themselves to help renovate the house, in the quest to restore dignity to the family living there.
Among the members, donations came in the form of cash, glass window panes, window frames, paint, a toilet, vinyl flooring, fridge, beds, blankets and linen. The Correctional Services staff, together with parolees, commenced this project during October and it was completed in December.
The initiative behind the use of offender labour, is a reminder to offenders and ex-offenders off their responsibility to plough back to the communities they have wronged, and also to make the community aware that rehabilitation is a societal responsibility.
