MOSSEL BAY NEWS - More than 400 people have been displaced following the unrest in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay.
The majority are reported to be Mozambican nationals, while at least 10 South Africans said they were also forced to flee as they felt unsafe amid the violence.
This is according to the Western Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile.
He was accompanied by the Garden Route District’s police commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana, and the KwaNonqaba Police Station’s commander, Lieutenant Colonel Virgie Julius, during his visit to KwaNonqaba today, 2 June, to assess the situation on the ground following the unrest that had erupted in the informal settlements in Asla Park.

Patekile confirmed that three people had been killed over the weekend, two Mozambican nationals and one South African, contradicting the earlier national media reports that had suggested five fatalities.
The police said, however, that the latest murder is not linked to the unrest.
Patekile said the police are working to stabilise the area and restore safety for all residents. “I want to assure the communities that the police are here to make sure they are safe,” he said.
He added that additional police resources and support units will be deployed to the area as the authorities continue to monitor the situation.
