MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Point Discovery Centre, which was first mooted for Mossel Bay's Point area 10 years ago, will be opening within six months' time.
This is according to the chairman of the Discovery Centre committee, Fred Orban.
Orban, an environmental activist, was chairman of the committee for the Point of Human Origins initiative at Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay and the founder of the popular Oyster Catcher Trail.
Large exhibition
There will be a large exhibition housed in the Point Discovery Centre, which will be a replica of the Pinnacle Point caves.
It will focus on the ancient heritage of Mossel Bay - the development of modern humans.
Orban says: "The St Blaize Cave will be the anchor part of the Cradle of Human Culture - the initiative by the Western Cape government."
There are already two containers on the site next the St Blaize Cave. Two more containers are being sourced. Orban says: "We had to redesign the centre because of the economic changes caused by Covid-19."
Orban invites the business sector in Mossel Bay to be involved and donate to the centre.
"Hardware stores and other commercial enterprises will then be contributing to the heritage of Mossel Bay."
Showcasing botany
Orban says there will be a hiking tour through the botanically beautiful area near the cave.
"Working with the Botanical Society, we will establish footpaths for short walks." When people go to the centre they can enter via that point.
"There is a little fountain there, opposite Frog Rock, where ships used to collect their water."
Orban says the long term plan is for people to access the centre via Bruns Road, besides having to take the circular drive around the Point.
"The long term vision is to have a miniature train connecting the end of Bruns Road to the centre, in order to ease traffic congestion around the Point.
"There will be sufficient parking," he assures. WhatsApp Orban (082 550 4788) for more information.
