MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local glass artist Zandra Klapwijk is ready to replace the window panes of a church in Heiderand, which were broken by vandals.
Mossel Bay Advertiser reported on the vandalism on 23 May.
This week the Advertiser contacted dominee Dirk de Bruyn at the Reformed Church, who said the church leadership had decided to place Perspex in front of the windows, before replacing the panes, to prevent further breakage.
It appears vandals threw stones at the unique, coloured glass panes, which had been handmade and supplied by Klapwijk’s father Wim, now deceased.
He had also been a glass artist and taught his daughter his techniques.
When the Advertiser reported on the breakage, 30 panes had been broken.
Klapwijk said this week it was not pleasant for the congregants to see the broken windows and she added that rainwater would enter the church, so she was keen to replace the panes as soon as possible.
“I will do it for no charge; for free,” she added.
She has supplied custom-made door windows for Mossel Bay residents and she also does lead-stained glass work.
De Bruyn said this week that the church was currently securing quotations on the cost of the Perspex.
No arrests have been made in connection with the vandalism.
The case is being investigated by Mossel Bay Police Station. Sergeant Leoni Petersen (044 606 2823 or 079 893 9937) is the investigator in the case.
The police have appealed for anyone with information that could help find the vandals, to contact them.
