MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Partnerships between various stakeholders have led to steady progress with a new playground for the learners of Garden Route Primary School in Asla Park, Mossel Bay.
This week, the municipality's portfolio chairperson for Infrastructure Services, Councillor Anton Dellemijn, Councillor Donovan Claassen, and Mayor Dirk Kotzé met the school's principal, Nicolas Gertse, Standard Bank's André Jonker, as well as the Louis 57 Foundation's Petrie Cronjé to check progress on the field for the playground, which is set to be opened in early 2024.
The initiative was started in 2022 when the principal, the mayor, the principal administrator in the office of the mayor, Willie Conradie, and Cronjé as well as André Rall, from the construction company, Henra Group, held an initial meeting at the school.
One of Henra's safety officers was also present. The presence of the safety officer was essential, Gertse said, given the tragic incident that took place at the school in which a learner died while work on constructing a playground was in progress.
The tragic loss meant that the process was brought to a standstill. Attention to safety has since been placed at the forefront of the entire process.
"Children are the professionals and leaders of our town's future, and I am so glad that our mayor is at the helm of this initiative and that he brings people to our town who make a meaningful difference," said Gerste. - Mossel Bay Municipality.
