MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A near drowning incident took place at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay this evening, 19 December.
In a video shared with Mossel Bay Advertiser, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 15 in Mossel Bay responded to the scene, as well as emergency medical services.
At this stage, the exact circumstances are unknown. Mossel Bay Advertiser has sent an enquiry to the NSRI and will update readers once more information becomes available.
Here are a few tips for staying safe on beaches:
1. Swim at beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty. If lifeguards are not on duty, do not swim.
2. Swim between the lifeguard flags. Lifeguards watch swimmers very carefully between the flags - just wave an arm if you need help.
3. Don’t drink alcohol before swimming.
4. Don’t swim alone. If you are with a buddy while swimming, there is someone who can call for help if you need it.
5. Adult supervision and barriers to water are vital. Adults who are supervising children in or near water must be able to swim. This is vital if it is at a water body that does not have lifeguards on duty.
6. Know how to survive rip currents.
7. Don’t attempt a rescue yourself. If you see someone in distress, call a lifeguard or the NSRI by dialling 112 or their Emergency Operations Centre on 087 094 9774. After calling for help try and throw something that floats to the person in difficulty.
8. Learn how to do CPR.
9. Anyone launching any kind of craft onto water, coastal and inland, should download and use the NSRI's RSA SafeTrx free cellphone app. Family and friends can monitor your trip using the app.
