MOSSEL BAY NEWS - After two antelope, five tortoises, two frogs and two owls were hit by vehicles in Dana Bay in less than two weeks, the Dana Bay Conservancy has urged visitors and residents of the area to adhere to the speed limits.
Dana Bay Conservancy chairperson, Erika van der Westhuizen, says the above incidents are only what has been reported to the conservancy, with the most recent incident having been reported to the committee this morning, 1 January.
Van der Westhuizen says the injured antelope, also suspected of being hit by a car, was last spotted in Compacta Street, making its way into nearby bushes. She said the antelope was walking with difficulty due to an injury to one of its legs.
She requests those who see the injured antelope to report it to the conservancy immediately at 083 708 9235.
"We can only phone the vet if the antelope is monitored and we have an exact location. The vet will not come to look for the antelope in the bushes," she says.

Van der Westhuizen also asks those who spot the injured antelope, to provide photographs of it once seen as the conservancy does not yet know if the antelope is male or female, nor the extent of its injury.
She urges motorists in Dana Bay to reduce their speed, to be alert of their surroundings, and to be on the look out for signs indicating wildlife in the area as well as for any wildlife grazing at the roadside, especially at night.
