MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Midbrak Conservancy is making a call for new members and volunteers to not only grow the group, but also to help in its battle against rooikrans (Acacia cyclops) and other alien invasive species in its green areas.
The conservancy stretches from the Little Brak River to the border of the Great Brak River Conservancy.
Recently, a Midbrak Conservancy committee member, Wendy Wiles, posted about the clearing of rooikrans, especially along the Midbrak Trail, on the conservancy’s Facebook page.
According to Cape Nature, rooikrans is at the top of its list for invasive alien plants affecting the Western Cape.
Speaking to Mossel Bay Advertiser on Tuesday 14 April, Wiles said the conservancy members have been tackling the rooikrans by chainsawing it down, however, most of the members are elderly.
The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve has helped the conservancy by introducing two biocontrol measures - two different insects that attack the rooikrans specifically and slowly kill it.
Wiles said while this was extremely helpful, it is also quite a slow process, and the conservancy would like to continue with the chainsaw method to remove the rooikrans more quickly.
She said the conservancy is looking for new members and volunteers to help with this, and if it receives enough commitments from people to help, it will organise a date for a clearing of the invasive vegetation.
If you would like to join the conservancy or volunteer to help clear alien invasive plants from the area, call or WhatsApp Wiles on 061 683 9460. You can also visit the Facebook page, Midbrak Conservancy/Bewarea.
