MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The N2 direction Mossel Bay near Powertown was closed for a few hours on Wednesday evening due to public unrest. Service delivery issues is said to be the cause of the unrest.
According to the Station Commander of Great Brak SAPS, Captain Francois Henzen, the unrest started around 17:30.
The Mossel Bay Municipality issued a warning on its Facebook page alerting motorists of the road closure.
The warning read as follows:
"Provincial and municipal traffic, as well as the South African Police Service are at the scene in Powertown, Klein Brak River where public unrest is taking place. Tyres are being burnt on a section of the N2. Motorists are cautioned. East bound lanes are open to traffic from Mossel Bay to George. Both lanes west bound, George to Mossel Bay is closed. Traffic is being diverted on the R102 at the Klein Brak interchange."
The municipality confirmed the road had been reopened at 22:00.
On Thursday morning, the Mossel Bay Municipality reiterated (as in its notices issued on its Facebook page on Wednesday) that relevant law enforcement and police entities were on the scene.
It said councillor Anton Dellemijn, portfolio chairperson vir Infrastructure services, who is also one of the closest mayoral committee member to the Powertown area, spoke to members of the community on Wednesday evening.
"A follow-up meeting between members of the Powertown community and the executive management of the municipality has been called by the office of the municipal manager."
The meeting is set to take place on Thursday afternoon.
