MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local beauty queen Danica Barnard, a full-time B.Ed student who currently works at Curro Castle, won the Miss Africa United Nations title last weekend.
She will represent Africa internationally next year.
Danica, who was the only representative from the Western Cape, was crowned at the ATKV Buffelspoort, North West, after a rigorous week of judging.
She also received several special awards apart from winning the title.
Delegates competed in four categories: Miss Africa (ages 18-25 years, single); Ms Africa (ages 25-60 years, single/divorced/widowed/ engaged); Mrs Africa (ages 25-44 years, married) and Mrs Africa Classic (ages 45-60 years, any marital status).
A few of the judging criteria included being judged on their national outfits, portraying their African heritage; their evening gowns and interviews, as well as their portfolios and videos showcasing their seven-month journey as a finalist, to name but a few of the judging criteria.
Upon winning, Danica was overwhelmed at first by the support, not only from the general public, but was particularly touched by the good wishes received from all over Africa and overseas.
"To represent the African continent in America next year will be a huge honour that comes with big responsibilities and a lot of preparation.
"You need to be mentally, emotionally and physical very fit and strong."
Danica says the support of her community is essential.
She has a passion for children and strives to be a good role model and to help change lives. Therefore, she believes that spending quality time with children is the best investment you can make in their future.
"If you believe in yourself, you will be unstoppable," Danica says.
