MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The St Blaize Leos Club is launching a new drive to collect sanitary pads as a first step towards eventually advocating for pad dispensers in and around the Mossel Bay community.
The club named the initiative No Girl Left Behind - The Pad Project.
This project aims to ensure that girls and women in Mossel Bay have access to sanitary pads during their menstrual cycle, regardless of their financial situation, said club president, Mia Vorster, the mind behind the initiative.
"A friend and I recently discussed the disparity between readily available free condoms in public restrooms compared to the lack of access to menstrual products," said Vorster.
"We've all seen condom dispensers in public bathrooms, but why aren't there any pad dispensers? Periods are a natural part of life, and shouldn't be a barrier to education, work, or simply participating in daily activities."
While initially appealing for pad donations, the club hopes to eventually partner with the private sector and other partners to place pad dispensers in public restrooms across Mossel Bay.
Vorster said they are actively seeking support from the community to make this project a reality. This can include donations of pads and funding to purchase dispensers.
Lindi Nel, vice president of the club said they "believe that by working together, we can create a Mossel Bay where no girl is left behind because of her period."
