GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Island Lake has been temporarily closed for all recreational activities as a precautionary measure due to the presence of a blue-green algal bloom that could potentially be harmful.
According to Dr Sandra Taljaard, park manager for Wilderness Park, the situation is being monitored. "We will continue monitoring to evaluate the concentrations of dissolved nutrients and the abundance of blue-green algae."
Taljaard said the algal bloom was first noticed at the beginning of the week and members of the public reported an odour. Scientists were sent to investigate.
A water sample was sent to a laboratory in Bloemfontein where it was confirmed that the species present is capable of producing toxins. "More samples have been taken that are currently being tested."
Taljaard said algal blooms in standing water are often triggered by hot temperatures or a rapid change in temperatures.
"Contributing factors could also be the mobilisation of nutrients from the breakdown of accumulated organic matter, droppings from birds, and recent freshwater inflows. The public will be kept informed and notified of any change in the condition of the lake."
