MOSSEL BAY NEWS & VIDEO - On retiring after a life in the corporate world, Sharon Brummer finally let her imagination take flight.
She worked for electronics company Sony SA for 30 years, until it ceased operations in the country.
After travelling along the Garden Route, she "fell in love" with Mossel Bay and has been living in town for the past three years. Since her school days, she had an interest in writing, however, she only started writing productively once she stopped working.
"I just decided to pick up my pen and see how it goes." She has now published two intrigue/romance novels, one book of poetry and a short story book, and three children's books.
"Once I started, I could not stop. I'm addicted. I enjoy creating characters, plots, and then threading them all together in one exciting web."
Sharon says she thinks about writing all the time. Her genres seem a little divergent, but this she attributes to getting a feeling for a certain topic, or genre, and then finding herself sitting at the keyboard, "banging away".
"The change of genre does not challenge me at all. I love writing poetry, stories – long or short – children's books, novels. Just as long as I write."

When a topic pops into her head, her imagination just takes flight and she feels inspired enough to write for hours on end.
"My grandchildren inspired my kiddies' books. Brayden, who is eight, has read my first children's book already. I am sending the next two books to him. Christian is only 10 months old, but his parents read my books to him"
Sharon's two sons and their families live in Australia. If you want to pursue writing, Sharon says, the craft of writing has to come to you easily.
"For those who love writing and are able to persevere, sit down and start writing. Anything. Don't wait for the perfect topic, or perfect setting.
"You will never write if you hesitate, no matter how many good ideas you have in your head. Put them down on paper. Ideas in your head are not good enough."
Her recipe for writing success is summed up in one word – action. "Let your fingers do the work. I write most days. I'm in front of my computer; my fingers and head work well together. However, you also have to do research. Know your facts. Do your homework."
Sharon's books are available online at Malherbe Publishers, Amazon, and Google Books. "There's something for everyone, especially in these isolated times," she chuckles in conclusion.
