MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Sphahle Sixaxeni (14) was not surprised to learn he had been selected for the Interprovincial Hockey Tournament on 27 June.
He told Mossel Bay Advertiser he had expected this due to his consistent hard work and dedication to the sport.
A Grade Eight learner of Point High School, Sphahle has been playing hockey since he was nine. Practising three to four times a week, he has remained committed to this sport.
Of course, he cannot slack off on his schoolwork. Sphahle has figured out a system for staying on top of his academics as well as being able to play hockey.
"Before practice, I'll do some of my homework. Right after practice, I continue," he says.
For this youngster, the best thing hockey presents him is a challenge. "I love new challenges and enjoy playing against other players, because I learn a thing or two from them. They push me to be a better player," he says.
His family, but especially his mother, is more than supportive towards his love of hockey and the talent he has displayed throughout the years.
"She is always watching my games, is always cheering for me and always tells me what I need to work on, which I appreciate and don't really take as criticism."
When he is not on the hockey field, Sphahle can be found jogging, reading or playing soccer with his friends.
But he can't stay away from hockey for too long, though. He told the Advertiser he also enjoys watching other games.
The costs of getting to the Interprovincial Hockey Tournament remain a challenge. Anyone who would like to make a financial contribution to Sphahle's journey may contact him on 073 432 2780.
