GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - It's Women's Month and we are interviewing women who have a positive influence on their communities. One such woman is the Great Brak Police's Sergeant Lauriane Botha.
She shines with passion and dedication to the community.
Tell us about yourself and your work? I'm a woman who has made significant contributions to society. My dedication to duty shines through in my commitment to the South African Police Service and my genuine care for the community. I'll consistently go above and beyond the call of duty, always willing to take on extra responsibility and work long hours to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community.
What are the achievements of which you're most proud? The birth, raising and education of my children. I've had to overcome negative expectations and being told I'm either worthless and only good for one thing or that I will never be able to accomplish much, and yet I've tried and succeeded. Among many other things, I was first runner-up in the Garden Route District Policewoman of The Year in 2023.
What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them? Women are under represented in leadership positions and in certain fields, making it harder to find role models and mentors. Women are affected by violence and harassment. They often shoulder a greater burden of caregiving for children, elderly parents and other family members, which impacts their personal lives. This creates the perception that women who have children are less committed to their careers, leading to fewer opportunities.
What does Women's Day mean to you? It's a day to celebrate the achievements of women through history and acknowledge the ongoing fight for gender equality and to inspire women to pursue their dreams, break down barriers and advocate for their rights.
Who have been some inspirational women in your life and why? Malala Yousafzai, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Marie Curie. All these women are groundbreakers in their own right.
What are some of the challenges women still face? How can they be overcome? Gender-based violence, lack of representation in leadership, health care disparities, social and cultural norms and economic inequality. Governments, organisations, individuals and communities must work together to create a world where women have equal opportunities and are free from discrimination and violence.
What message do you have for women this Women's Day? You are a force of nature, capable of anything you set your mind to. You are strong, resilient and inspiring. Let's celebrate your achievements and continue to fight for equality and empowerment. Shine brightly.
