MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Community leaders representing the Sinethemba community, a settlement of informal structures on the outskirts of Asla Park, received the good news on Thursday afternoon, 21 June, that soon they will receive legal electrical connections.
In a feedback meeting with the community leaders, municipal directors Dick Naidoo (technical services) and Carl Venter (planning and integrated services) relayed the good news that stemmed from a special council meeting on Wednesday, 20 June.
At the special council meeting it was unanimously agreed that the private land where the settlement is situated be acquired.
Director Naidoo explained to the community the dire consequences of their illegal tapping of electricity from utility poles, in Dube Street especially.
He said as soon as the new financial year starts in July, the community can expect a follow-up meeting, this time with the relevant contractor, to be scheduled to discuss an implementation plan to provide electricity to the approximate 160 dwellings in Sinethemba.
Councillor Petrus Lechaba hailed the good news as a new dawn for the community.
He said the news was exactly what the community was waiting for, and he thanked community leaders for their efforts to get to this point amicably.
