MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Join the exciting Glentana wreck walk and beach clean-up planned for July when the Visgraat Restaurant at Glentana, in association with the Mossel Bay Municipality as part of the Soul Festival, have arranged a wreck walk and beach clean-up on Saturday, 14 July.
This is the ideal way to actively enjoy the unique beauty the coastline has to offer, whilst personally getting involved in the promotion of its sustainability.
Joining the walk will be Ian Johnson, a passionate conservationist and photographer who recently completed the walk and was dismayed by the amount of pollution along the Garden Route coastline. This prompted him to get involved.
“It was disturbing to notice the amount of plastic bags and bottles, fishing tackle and man-made waste strewn across the beach. The chronic pollution has a highly detrimental impact on our marine biodiversity”, Ian said.
The municipality will sponsor large bags for the clean-up effort and Visgraat will provide a cap and string bag with 500ml water and a treat for all participants.
After the outing, a light meal (roosterkoek with choice of filling) and a soft drink will be available at R50. The usual menu will also be available.
Glentana is in the process of applying for ‘Blue Flag Status’ of the main beach, an eco-label awarded to beaches with high standards and focuses on the environmental management of the coastline and coastal waters. Hopefully, this effort will be the first of many towards inspiring environmental consciousness and the role that everyone has to play in conserving the oceans and beaches.
Local residents and holiday makers are invited to join the walk and help to make a difference.
Diarise Saturday, 14 July and be at the Visgraat Restaurant, Main Beach in Glentana at 08:45 for a meet and greet. The walk takes off at 09:00. It will cover a distance of approximately 3 kilometer to the wreck. As low tide is at 10:25, it should make for an easy walk for all.
However, do bring comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen.
