MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Members and partners of the Mossel Bay Local Drug Action Committee this year took a different stance regarding 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.
The committee, which includes representation from the Mossel Bay Municipality, police, Department of Social Development, Omgee Rehab, Concerned Women of Mossel Bay, Heart to Heart Care Centre, Department of Health, All Nations Helping Hans and Child Welfare, pooled their efforts for greater impact.
Under the banner, 365 Days of Actvism, the committee launched its campaign at Erika Primary School last week.
With a multi-pronged approach, great effort is being made to visit rural areas to educate communities. An outreach among the youth in various local neighbourhoods in the greater Mossel Bay area was also rolled out.
The committee is strongly advocating "stopping the violence by ending the silence". This, it proposes, can be done based on principles that need to be entrenched in the community's attitude towards gender-based violence, as well as child abuse. These principles are awareness, action and accountability that need to be implemented all year round.
