MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A member of the public, Kosie van der Merwe, contacted the Mossel Bay Advertiser, asking whether sufficient fire prevention measures were in place at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex in town.
He pointed out that the replica of Dias' caravel in the museum was wooden and would burn easily.
Van der Merwe said that in light of the fire at the Parliament buildings in Cape Town and previous to that, the fire at the University of Cape Town, it was in the public's interest to know whether adequate precautions against fire were being taken at the Dias Museum.
The Advertiser enquired to museum manager Mbulelo Mrubata, who said: "The museum has adequate equipment and trained personnel to deal with such an emergency.
"There is clear evacuation signage in all the buildings.
"The only aspect that requires improvement is infrastructure, as the buildings are old and some of them have steep staircases and emergency exit doors, which are not user friendly.
"The Department of Transport and Public Works will sort out this predicament soon."
