Mr Wiggett had the habit of taking his wife a cup of tea early every morning. When on Monday he did not keep to this ritual, his wife became worried and upon investigation, found his body lying at the entrance to the house.
On Monday, the commanding officer of the Great Brak River investigative team, Wo Sias Weyers, and his team were on the scene to investigate the murder.
They were assisted by Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) of George, as well as the Outeniqua K9 Unit.
Suspect positively linked
The suspect was arrested after valuable information from the community was received and he was positively linked to the scene of the murder. The house was ransacked and it is speculated that the motive may have been robbery.
The suspect faces a charge of murder and appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court yesterday, Thursday 18 September.
Mr Wiggett was a retired teacher who taught business economics and accountancy at York High School in George before taking early retirement.
His brother and family live in the adjacent house.
The Mossel Bay Advertiser spoke to his wife, Dee who said they have lived on the Great Brak Island since 1985 before her husband took early retirement.
She described Mr Wiggett as "a good guy, someone who appreciated and loved life". The Wiggetts were married for 52 years.
Their two children, Janys and David, live in Cape Town and Pretoria, respectively.
It seems the suspect was known to the victim and Capt Malcolm Pojie, provincial SAPS spokesperson, stressed that residents should ensure they keep adequate records of all of their employees, even casual employees.
"Do not summarily open a door when someone known to you comes calling. Ensure that all safety measures such as alarms and panic buttons are in optimal working condition and that they are used," Capt Pojie stressed.
He also added that crime is commonplace in all communities and that residents should become much more aware of daily risks.
"Whatever is happening in crime hotspots across the country also happens in our community, only on a smaller scale. Being vigilant may be what it takes not to become a victim."
