MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A seal was freed from entanglement on a beach in Great Brak River this afternoon, 24 January.
Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) had received a call to rescue a seal near De Vette Mossel, and immediately, volunteers were sent out.
Upon arrival, the Smart volunteers found the seal with deep lacerations to its neck and body, caused by fishing line it had become entangled in.
The volunteers monitored the seal while personnel from the Garden Route SPCA's Mossel Bay branch made their way to the beach, equipped with a hoop from Smart's storage to help immobilise the seal.
When the SPCA arrived, the seal was immobilised in the hoop and the fishing line was removed before the seal returned to the sea.
"This incident once again illustrates the importance of cooperation between like-minded organisations," said Smart.
The organisation thanked everyone who was involved with detangling and rescuing the seal.
