MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The incoming tide did little to dampen the spirits of Point High School’s matric learners as they took part in the traditional Die Poort Jump today, 9 October.
Although the event was not supported or approved by the school this year, the matrics, accompanied by family and friends, continued the decades-old tradition.
The school’s decision followed a notice from the Western Cape Education Department sent on Monday 5 October, outlining important safety guidelines, supervision, risk management and the approval required for water-based activities.
Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) were also on hand at Die Poort. Some were in the water to assist the learners as the tide came in.
Sunny weather added to the occasion, although the water was reportedly ice-cold. Last year’s matrics faced far less favourable conditions, with rain, strong winds and massive waves forcing some of the swim to be moved to Santos Beach.
