Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Although the official active search and rescue operation following a fatal incident off the coast of Mossel Bay has been concluded, one of African Marine Solutions’ (AMSOL) vessels remains on site and continues to monitor the area.
Five people were involved in the incident which took place on Wednesday morning, 30 September; three bodies were recovered the same day, while two people are still unaccounted for.
AMSOL issued a statement this afternoon, Thursday 1 October, confirming that those involved in the incident were AMSOL employees.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) said in its statement, also released this afternoon, that it has initiated a preliminary enquiry following the incident involving the tug Umkhuseli, which occurred approximately 47 nautical miles south of Mossel Bay.
“Preliminary information indicates that the incident began when a crew member reportedly fell overboard while working on deck. In response, a Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) carrying four crew members was launched from the vessel to recover the individual. The FRB subsequently capsized, resulting in a total of five persons entering the water,” Samsa said.
“Immediately following notification of the incident, the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) Cape Town activated a coordinated search and rescue response, mobilising a range of maritime and aviation assets. Vessels in the vicinity were diverted to assist with the search, while rescue efforts were supported by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the South African Police Service's (SAPS) water wings and helicopter resources.
“Following a comprehensive assessment of the search and rescue operation and consideration of all available information, the active search and rescue was concluded.”
AMSOL’s CEO, Dan Ngakane said it was with a deep sense of sadness that they “confirm the passing of three of our much loved and respected colleagues. We have been in direct contact with the families of all five affected seafarers since yesterday and are providing them with support and regular updates as confirmed information becomes available. Our thoughts are with family members, loved ones and the entire AMSOL community during this extremely challenging time.”
Of the five employees, one is from Durban and four from Cape Town.
AMSOL said search and recovery operations for the two seafarers who remain missing resumed at first light in the area today, with its tug ‘Inkanyezi’ on site. It said it continues to support the families and colleagues of the seafarers involved in this tragedy. “Both internal and external investigations have commenced.”
Samsa also extended its sincere condolences to the families, loved ones, friends and colleagues of the deceased seafarers. It also extended its appreciation to all organisations and personnel who participated in the search and rescue operation, including the crews of the assisting vessels, aviation crews, rescue personnel, and the staff of MRCC Cape Town.
“Further updates will be provided as and when information becomes available,” Samsa concluded.
