MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A first-of-its-kind charity walk, Steps of Courage, will take place in Mossel Bay on 31 October at an event supporting cancer patients, their families and their loved ones.
The walk’s organisers, Just Breathe in Care of Cancer, a non-profit organisation in Mossel Bay, said in a statement that community unity is key to Steps of Courage, second only to spreading awareness of the impact cancer has on so many lives.
“Everyone is invited - from families to survivors and supporters,” said the organisation.
The 4.1km and 1km routes are fully accessible to walkers of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. The walk will start at the Milkwood Primary School sports grounds at 08:00. Participants are expected to complete the track in 60-90 minutes.
“This is no race - Steps of Courage will be taken at a relaxed pace,” said the statement.
And the dress code? Participants are asked to wear blue and pink to fit in with the bright colours of a like-minded crowd.
“These colours represent breast and prostate cancer, for which prevention through early detection has saved thousands of lives. Cancer affects families, friends, and entire communities. Through Steps of Courage, a safe space of hope, compassion and support will be created. By signing up for this inaugural walk, participants will support cancer patients throughout greater Mossel Bay,” it said.
The event will be promoted with posters and on social media, as inspirational moments such as the fun warm-up session, water points and wellness booths along the route will be captured, as well as a survivor-tribute tree.
Musical and related entertainment will be on hand.
Participants should leave their cars at The Point or at the Milkwood Primary School grounds and register 60 minutes before the start time. Tickets can be bought on-site or online at R50 per adult, while schoolgoing youngsters take their courageous steps for free.
The Steps of Courage walk’s main sponsors are Eden Oncology, Mossel Bay Radiology, Nurture Health, and Life Bay View Hospital.
“Each of these champions of the cause plays a vital role in every patient’s recovery process,” said Just Breathe in Care of Cancer. “OK Mini Market has now also come on board with a significant contribution to further the cancer cause ...
“Sadly, not every patient recovers, and whatever the outcome of their journey with cancer, the impact on families and loved ones is often profound.
“Together, we breathe. Together, we take Steps of Courage.”
