MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In the wake of the suspected xenophobic incidents in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay, this past weekend, the process of relocating the foreign nationals who have been displaced is under way.
“Consulates representing the affected foreign nationals have been activated and have engaged directly with the displaced persons to provide assistance and facilitate interventions where required,” said the Mossel Bay Municipality.
Efforts to transition the displaced individuals to more stable accommodation are under way. “Some individuals have already been relocated through the intervention of relevant authorities, while it is reported that transport arrangements, including buses scheduled from the afternoon of 1 June, are in place to assist with further relocations.”
According to the municipality, the unrest resulted in the destruction of an estimated 55 informal structures, which had led to the displacement of these individuals. A number of municipal community facilities were made available from Friday 29 May to provide temporary shelter.
“For security reasons, the locations of these facilities are not being publicly disclosed. Security measures were put in place at these facilities to safeguard the displaced persons and maintain order.”
The municipality confirmed that the situation in KwaNonqaba has stabilised, and no further incidents of violence or damage to property had been reported since Sunday 31 May. The authorities continue to monitor the identified hotspot areas as a precautionary measure.
The unrest is reportedly linked to a march that had been held on Friday, which the municipality has since said was unapproved.
“While the immediate situation has stabilised, the authorities emphasise that vigilance remains critical. Residents are urged to remain calm and supportive, allowing officials and humanitarian partners to continue managing the situation in a structured and responsible manner.”
The municipality also reiterated the importance of relying on verified information and encouraged the public to stay informed through its official communication platforms.
