KWANONQABA NEWS - The body of a dead newborn baby was found in a plastic bag at the Mossel Bay transfer station on Saturday 14 March, among the domestic waste disposed by the Mossel Bay public, some of which is managed at the transfer station.
Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, spokesperson for the KwaNonqaba Police Station, told Mossel Bay Advertiser the infant was reportedly a girl.
Her placenta was still attached to her body.
The Mossel Bay transfer station’s senior foreman, Siphe Williams, told the Advertiser some waste reclaimers, who were going through the piles of discarded waste materials, had found the body.
They alerted the station’s security guard, who then informed the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management team, who happened to be on the scene, in the process of controlling a fire that had erupted at the station a few days before, on Thursday 12 March.
Kapp says the emergency medical services declared the baby dead on the scene.
The KwaNonqaba Police have opened an inquest into the matter and the investigation is currently under way. At this stage, how the baby ended up at the station is as yet unclear.
Anyone with any information should contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Geoffrey Moos, on 060 651 5948.
