MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape recognises the need to invest in young people and through the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), under the chairmanship of Jaco Londt, the Imbewu Political Academy was established in 2021.
Imbewu means "seed", and through the programme the DA seeks to "grow its own timber" and invest in the next generation of leaders from across the province.
The academy is open to active DA members under the age of 35, who qualify and apply for a unique opportunity to get political education and, most importantly, to learn about leadership and self-development.
The class of 2022 was in Mossel Bay from 9 to 12 June and was hosted by the chair of the region, Venolea Fortuin, and the mayor, Dirk Kotzé.
The full programme had top speakers from the DA members of Parliament, including the provincial leader, Tertuis Simmers. Besides political education, the students also got an opportunity to debate among themselves on critical topics, from the Russia and Ukraine war and its effects on the South African economy, to education and immigration laws following a wave of xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg last month.
Mossel Bay is fast becoming the destination of choice and attracting all kinds of people to the town and that can only mean good things for the local economy.
