MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Those The 42m Ferris or observation wheel would have been situated in the Point Caravan Park on Point Road.
Apart from residents in the Point area, representatives of Heritage Mossel Bay immediately raised their concerns. They mentioned the negative visual impact of such a huge construction and its detraction from the Point's sense of place as a unique heritage site.
They also mentioned concerns about the high density development at the Point and the impact on traffic and parking, should a construction of this nature become a reality.
The resolution taken by council against the proposed construction states that due to the unique heritage value of the Point and the relation with paleoethology discoveries at the Pinnacle Point caves, the item was referred back until such time that the application with the United Nations Unesco for a World Heritage Site is decided upon.
"Yes it is a win for the heritage legacy of the town," said Carina Wiggill from Heritage Mossel Bay.
A Facebook post on Heritage Mossel Bay's page last Thursday, 31 March, following the announcement, read: "The citizens and friends of Mossel Bay, made their opinion known, overwhelming against a Ferris wheel. We are sure that through each and every person's contribution to this campaign, the outcome of the decision was reached.
"Thank you for your participation in guarding our most significant heritage asset and the sense of place, The Point and its environs."
