The Oyster Bay Reserve (OBR) management decided to link the hiking trail construction project with a community outreach project, but this time with their neighbours, the Mossel Bay Correctional Services Youth Centre's Outreach department.
The youths were invited to assist the OBR team to upgrade the existing Bitou Riverine hiking trail and create a new hiking loop to the Reserve.
Youths who showed a passion for nature were selected and brought out to get involved with the Oyster Bay Reserve's team.
For some of them it was the first time in five years that they had been outside the prison walls. "It is great being able to work outdoors and one day when this trail is complete, we can also look back and be proud of the work we did here," said one of the Youth Offenders.
Warren and Linkey Jones (Healing Ministries) assisted with the day's outreach and started the day off with a praise and worship session. All were soon dancing and smiling and making the most of the beautiful day.
Thereafter the group was divided into smaller work parties and started cleaning pathways and stacking stone edging on the routes.
The youths were happy to be included in making a difference on the Reserve, and to give something back to the greater community. They spent a few hours out on the Reserve, and made a noticeable impact. More important was the personal impact the outreach had on the youths, who were happy to be given the opportunity to do something out in the open where there efforts would leave a legacy for all to see.
The team is eager to start working jointly on several other community projects, such as creating boma's for future children and school camps.
