MOSSEL BAY NEWS - To mark National Child Protection Week, which is from 27 May to 3 June, the SA Police Service Unit for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) and a local church joined hands in their fight to combat child abuse.
On Saturday, 25 May pastor Zaida Swart from Pentecostal Ministry in Christ church and Capt Geoffrey Gordon, commander of the FCS Unit in Mossel Bay, presented a child protection awareness programme in Civic Park.
"Most of our children are subjected to some sort of abuse. Sexual abuse was the main topic discussed as part of the awareness campaign.
Children were taught that their bodies belong to them and no one else has the right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable," explained Pastor Swart.
General safety tips were given, such as warning the children not to walk home alone after school and not to take short cuts in deserted areas and streets. Children were warned never to get into strangers' cars.
"Normally the kidnapper approaches the child by asking for directions. We plead with our parents to take care of their children and make sure that the home environment is safe and secure for their children. "Our thanks goes to Mrs Kruger who donated the T shirts, as well as CTH Sales and Distributors for the printing of the T-shirts."
Pastor Zaida Swart addresses the children of Civic Park as part of an awareness project during Child Protection Week.
The session concluded with Matthew 19:14. Jesus said: "Let the little children come to Me; and do not hinder them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as them."
