Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - There was an accident on 24 March and another on 12 August involving Checkers Sixty60 motorcyclists in Mossel Bay.
Checkers Sixty60 motorcyclists deliver groceries to shoppers who buy them using the Checkers Sixty60 App on their cellphones.
Mossel Bay Advertiser asked Shoprite Holdings, which owns the Shoprite and Checkers stores, if it would consider supplying the Checkers Sixty60 motorcyclists with protective gear or if Checkers would consider another mode of transport for delivering groceries, because motorcyclists are vulnerable.
In a statement, Shoprite noted that Sixty60 drivers were independent contractors.
It stated: "Owner operators undergo a thorough vetting process before being contracted to provide this service and as independent contractors must ensure that the delivery vehicles adhere to the necessary legal requirements to be used on public roads and to provide this service. Ad hoc inspections are done to verify compliance.
The statement noted: "Protective motorcycle jackets are issued to all drivers. Additionally, extensive onboarding and training covering a wide spectrum of aspects including safety protocols and accident procedures, defensive as well as anti-hijacking driving techniques are provided.
"Drivers also have access to in-field operations teams, regionalised workshop facilities and a central support team to assist with technical needs that may arise.
"The importance of safe driving disciplines is continuously reiterated with the various driving teams to improve any shortcomings that drivers may have and members of the public who wish to compliment good or report bad driving behaviour can do so by calling 0800 00 6060."
