MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality has issued a warning to the public regarding people allegedly posing as municipal officials and falsely claiming that residents’ accounts are in arrears.
The municipality issued the warning on its WhatsApp channel on Monday 4 May, and further stated that these “scammers” have also allegedly threatened some residents with immediate electricity disconnection or removal of their meters if they do not make any payments.
The municipality’s statement said no disconnections of this nature are being carried out, and that no municipal official working in the field is authorised to request or receive cash or direct payments.
“Payments to the municipality are only accepted at official municipal cashier points or through approved digital payment channels,” it said.
“Members of the public are strongly urged not to make any payments, transfer funds, or share personal or banking details with anyone making such claims.”
Should any residents feel threatened or unsure, they should contact the municipality for verification on 044 606 5000 or to report the matter on the anti-fraud hotline on 0800 333 466.
The municipality also requested that elderly residents and family members who may be targeted as well, be warned of this.
