MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Bail was denied to the 12 people, nine of whom are minors, accused of the murder of Yongama Tiko.
The accused have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance on 14 August.
Tiko was murdered on Sunday morning, 30 June at about 02:40 in Scholtz Street in KwaNonqaba. He was stabbed 27 times all over his body with sharp objects and died in hospital as a result.
KwaNonqaba police investigating officer Sgt Ella Mentoor - assisted by Sgt Campher, Wo Barnard and Sgt Hector (K9) - made the arrests after valuable information was received from eye witnesses who could also positively identify a number of the suspects.
The investigating team also recovered some of the knives used in the attack which is said to have been gang related. Doctors have confirmed to the police that some of the wounds were the result of a panga attack.
Mentoor had to face three hours of gruelling cross examination by the legal representative for the accused in court. The commanding officer of the KwaNonqaba police investigating unit, Capt Ashley Michaels, said she was highly impressed with the thorough work by Sgt Mentoor and the team who assisted her in bringing the perpetrators to book.
The KwaNonqaba Police also thank the community who responded with valuable information that led to the arrests.
Tiko was identified at the hospital by his mother, Nosisi Tiko, and he was buried on Saturday, 13 July in Qumbo in the Eastern Cape.
