MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Bail was denied for Darren Edwards (24), the man accused of the murder of Diego Wessels (17), in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court this morning, 8 July.
Diego was stabbed to death on Saturday 27 June for allegedly slashing the tyres of the accused’s car.
The magistrate took several factors into account before delivering bail judgment, including the likelihood that Edwards may evade future court proceedings should he be released into the custody of his aunt in Cape Town, the violent nature of the crime, the fact that Edwards had allegedly “hunted and killed the victim like prey”, which, according to the magistrate, can be considered as premeditated murder, and the community’s concerns for their safety, which was voiced in a petition signed by almost 500 people from D’Almeida, Mossel Bay.
Suspect’s safety
It was also reiterated in court that Edwards’ safety is a serious concern for his family, due to an alleged threat that he may be killed while in police custody, as well as concerns raised by the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Marizaan du Plessis, that the community may “take the law into their own hands and maybe kill him” should he be released back into the community.

However, the court heavily considered the possibility that the accused would flee should he reside in Cape Town or return to D’Almeida while the case is ongoing, “as that would be the appropriate response of a panicked person”, said the magistrate.
Edwards could face life in prison, which is the minimum sentence for a crime of this nature.
The matter was postponed for further investigation to 24 August. The accused will remain in police custody until then.
Victim’s family relieved
Following the court proceedings, Mossel Bay Advertiser spoke to the victim’s father, Flip April, about the outcome of Edwards’ bail application.
“We, as a family, feel so relieved that his bail was denied,” said April.
“It would have been really traumatic for us if he had to be outside while we are burying Diego. His family can still see him and give him a hug on Saturday, but what can I do? I have to stand in front of a casket to say goodbye to my son.”
Another memorial service for Diego will be held this evening in D’Almeida, a few days before his funeral on Saturday 11 June.
