MOSSEL BAY NEWS - An anti-snare walk was held on Saturday, 4 May, at Great Brak River.
Leon Rossouw from the Wildlife Crime Information Network (WCIN) in Mossel Bay led the group of 22 volunteers on a walk on the Wolwedans Trail in the Great Brak Conservancy.
Joining the group was Carlo van Tonder from Cape Nature and two Africa Media photographers and videographer students from Texas and Ghana, who came along to experience and get footage of the walk.
During the walk only one snare was found and skeletal remains of an animal caught in a snare. Rossouw said: "For us it's good news that we only found one snare.
This means the area is relatively safe from poachers, but we will visit the area regularly to save and protect the animals in the conservancy." Van Tonder said: "We can see the snare walks motivate the public to get involved and create awareness within the community.
As more and more people come forward and actually find snares, it becomes a reality that these types of crimes take place in our area."
