MOSSEL BAY NEWS - During the fires in the Garden Route in 2019 and more recently, the building collapse in George, the George Alert Team (GAT) played an important role in supplying and coordinating resources.
In the light of the George building disaster, the founders of the GAT have approached neighbouring towns to set in motion the establishment of more alert teams in the region and this includes Mossel Bay.
Pieter Nel and Carl van Blerk from the GAT attended the Mossel Bay Business Chamber's most recent networking event, where they shared some information about the GAT and mooted the Mossel Bay Alert Team (MAT).
As with the building collapse and fires, a city or town never knows when disaster might strike, but it needs to be ready, Nel said.
André van der Nest, president of the Mossel Bay Lions Club, will be heading up the MAT.
As with the GAT, the MAT will comprise volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including service clubs, religious leaders and professionals.
These various individuals and organisations will then be ready to assist if a disaster hits Mossel Bay.
As defined by the existing GAT, whether it's extending a helping hand to those affected or assuming leadership roles in managing essential services, MAT will be committed to serving the community with dedication and resolve. No contribution or skill is too small.
The GAT explained: "A crisis is hardly ever predictable, and the urgency of preparation and readiness can save lives when a disaster occurs.
"Alert team members maintain constant communication channels, ensuring that equipment, volunteers and much-needed support can be deployed within minutes of an official crisis announcement, whether it affects one person or thousands."
