MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Women from Joe Slovo in Mossel Bay were hosted at a special event organised by the ACDP Women of Destiny on Saturday, 5 June.

Jeanette Dreyer, ACDP Women of Destiny branch chair for Joe Slovo, organised the function.

The guest was teacher and therapist, Charlotte Mitchell, from George.

She soon had the women dancing and laughing with her fun ice breakers and her engaging style of address.

Mitchell said women found it easy to think of things they did not like about themselves, but difficult to think of things they liked about themselves. And as each women was asked to name something they did not like about themselves, this was truly evident.

They struggled to mention something they liked about themselves.

Then each woman had to write down the thing they did not like about themselves on a piece of paper and throw the piece of paper away in a dustbin, indicating they had dealt with the negative issue and it was in the past.

Mitchell said the thing they did not like about themselves was often linked with something negative from their past.

Universal issues such as women's relationship with food, how they felt about their bodies, the various roles they juggled and their place in society were discussed. The women had plenty of opportunity to express themselves.

'Share the burden'
Mitchell urged the women to tell someone if they were not okay - not the village gossip, but someone that they trusted, who was walking with the Lord. "Share the burden," Mitchell urged.

She said women wore masks everyday and pretended everything was all right.

There were children, young women and older women at the event and everyone marvelled that one of the women was brave enough to bring her three-day-old baby, who everyone made a fuss of.

Mitchell told the women: "You are beautiful just the way God created you. You don't have to colour your hair or straighten your hair, paint your face or wear a particular brand of clothing." She quoted Genesis 1:27, "God created man in His own image."

Dreyer urged the women to make Jesus their main source of support. She mentioned the Bible story of the woman at the well who encountered Jesus. Women tended to expect their spouse or their friends to fulfil their needs instead of Jesus, she pointed out. John 4:14 reads: "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst."
