GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - Passionate community members from Great Brak stood together, persevered and collected 450kg of plastic tags and bottle tops to provide a wheelchair to someone in need.
The Sweethearts Foundation, an official non-profit organisation, collects and recycles bread tags and plastic bottle tops and provides wheelchairs to those who need them most.
They have 51 collection points so far. Val Thomson, part of the Great Brak Conservancy steering committee and a member of the Sweethearts, initiated collection points in the Great Brak area.
There are collection bins at the municipal offices, the library, De Dekke Spar, The Youth Café and at schools and retirement villages.
Once enough tags and tops are collected on behalf of the Sweethearts Foundation, they are picked up.
From the conservancy's perspective, the awareness of recycling, upcycling and removing plastic from the environment is as important as someone getting a wheelchair.
With the conservancy's chairman being in a wheelchair and being a contributing member of society, it understands what a difference for the better a wheelchair makes to someone's life.
Val says that the collection started slowly, but the word has spread and Sweethearts Foundation reached its goal last week.
She is optimistic it will reach the second 450kg collection much faster than the first. For more information on the conservancy and its projects, contact Scott Thomson (scottjonathanthomson@gmail.com).
