1. Be aware of your surroundings.
At night time, drive slower when approaching a red light so that the light changes green by the time you reach the intersection. You also need to leave enough space between you and the car in front of you so you will have a chance to escape in the event that something happens.
Always look out for obstacles on the road like broken glass, sharp objects or anything out of the ordinary.
2. Don’t leave yourself vulnerable to criminals.
We are all guilty of leaving our valuables like our handbag, keys, sunglasses and cell phones on the seat next to us – this the biggest mistake you can make.
Take away the attraction by making sure that all your valuable are out of sight. Don’t leave anything on the back seat or next to you. Rather put it in the boot or under your seats.
We know it’s difficult, but try not to drive around while holding your cell phone in your hand. Sometimes criminals work in groups and will let the others know that your vehicle is on its way by waiting at the next stop.
3. Protection is key.
Start with the basics by always keeping your doors locked and your windows closed. You’ll be surprised with how many hijackers make use of the opportunity when they see that the doors are unlocked.
Always have some sort of protection with you when you are driving, like pepper spray, because this will give you protection in the worst case scenario. Just make sure that you know how to use it by practising beforehand in an outdoor area.
If you are going to be alone on the road, tell someone like a friend or family member where you are going in case something happens. Make sure your cell phone is charged at all times and have a car charger with you in case the battery runs low.
