MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club (MBYBC) has noted the judgment delivered on 30 April in the Western Cape High Court.
It received a copy of the judgment on Wednesday, 2 May and the club's legal representatives are studying it.
The MBYBC intends to lodge an appeal and there is no way of telling just how long the appeal process will take.
Club president Wilhelm von Schütz said, however, it is the 200 young, disadvantaged youths who train for free as part of the club's youth development plan who will lose out in the end.
"It is by no means the end of the road. My greatest concern is for the young people in our youth development programme who are given a chance to gain tremendous life skills.
"They will be the biggest losers in the end. They are now given an opportunity to aspire to become skippers on yachts and to see the world; what is to become of their dreams?" The management of the MBYBC is exploring other possibilities, among others to move the club to different premises.
"The facilities established over some 60 years are worth R12m to R15m. They cater perfectly to the needs of the club, which is run as a non-profit organisation. The club caters for several events in the course of the year that attracts hundreds if not thousands of people, many of whom again visit with their families at a later stage.
"The club contributes in a huge way to tourism and economic development in town.
"Residents should realise that the new entity will run the facilities for their own profit. While we as a management committee never earned a salary, everything they do will be to better their bottom line."
Von Schütz added that the MBYBC has a proud tradition and that it has served the town well over the years.
