MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The New Life Theatre started the year with drama and sound workshops aimed at the youth. These were presented in Mossel Bay and Little Brak River.
The workshops were intended to develop imagination and creative responses. Opportunities were provided to stimulate careful, focused listening using a range of voices and a variety of styles.
The youth attending were helped to see issues and dilemmas from a number of perspectives.
During the workshop, self-confidence on stage was cultivated.
"We engaged the children's imaginations through play, to deepen their concentration. They were asked to react, listen and cooperate," explains Johnnie Campher of New Life.
Characters were created to engage pupils in drama activities involving: discussion and sharing of ideas and cooperation, as well as planning and enacting responses. Opportunities were provided for "teachers in role" to extend pupils' vocabulary, speaking skills and imagination.
"Through these workshop students experience applying body, breathing and voice techniques to text. It is designed so that students gain a deeper understanding of basic vocal techniques which can be transferred into other areas of their work."
The use of sound effects was also touched on. At the end of the workshops the different groups came together for a performance and received a certificate. The workshop was presented free of charge at the end of January.
