GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality is aware of messages doing the rounds regarding a high incidence of typhoid fever in the Western Cape.
Typhoid fever is caused by bacteria present in infected food or water.
Nadia Ferreira, Principal Communications Officer from the Western Cape Department of Health, gave the following comment:
“We are aware of an old WhatsApp doing the rounds on social media which is now deliberately shared to scare people. We do not condone such malicious action and encourage people to obtain accurate and verified information from our platforms. There are no new outbreaks and clusters of Typhoid reported in the Western Cape.”
The Mossel Bay Municipality’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Dick Naidoo confirms that municipal water is safe for drinking and other domestic use such as food preparation and bathing. Water samples are taken at water purification plants, as well as the municipal reservoirs and at strategic points on the water networks. Regular tests are performed in accordance with SANS 241:2015 drinking water standards. SANS 241 limits are comparable to international drinking water quality guidelines. Drinking water should contain no harmful concentrations of chemicals or micro-organisms, and should ideally have a pleasant appearance, taste and odour.
The municipality encourages all consumers to immediately report incidents of discoloured water or odour in the water to the municipal water department at 044 6065282 during office hours.
