MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A tavern based in KwaNonqaba was recently fined R200 000 by the Western Cape Liquor Authority, the highest fine issued by the authority in months.
Spokesperson Nwabisa Mpalala says the tavern was linked to more than 15 offences.
"They sold liquor off the premises and didn't comply with trading hours, among other things." Mpalala says the owner paid the fine and the tavern is still open.
"In the last financial year, right across the entire province, the authority issued fines that reach a total of R1.9 million. Last quarter’s total of fines reached R600 000. In the past three months there were about 25 premises that transgressed in Cape Town which were visited by the WCLA inspectors."
Mpalala says there were various transgressions that resulted in these huge fines. "They ranged from premises selling liquor for off-consumption although they have an on-consumption liquor licence, no management appointment, off-consumption premises selling liquor to unlicensed premises and deviating from trading hours, to name a few transgressions.
