Andries Potgieter, Chairman of the Santos Haven Executive Committee, and Kate Barker, President of Rotary, both said how delighted and very proud they were that Santos Haven was a success.
Taffy Shearing read out the words of the address, which Alf Butcher, who has lived here the longest, presented to Kate Barker.
Later two trees were planted by two of the original Steering Committee members; Dr Theo Meyer and Mr Ian Hamilton.
Other members of that steering committee were Leo McNally (chairman), Dries Kotze, Rainer van Niekerk, Kat Pretorius, John Kelly, James Rutherford and Denis Hanafin.
It was a marvellous day. The manager, Steven de Kock, outshone himself with meticulous care to detail. The Community Brass Band of Mossel Bay played catchy numbers, and with the Junior Rotarians escorting the golden oldies around in their wheelchairs, nobody was left out. Feedem Pitseng produced a wide and varied menu, served from booths on the lawn and brought all their creativity and sense of fun to the occasion by having their assistants dress in fancy dress costumes; from exotic ladies to sailors and cowgirls, even a clown.
It was a warm and harmonious day which would have been worthy of the people who founded this retirement village in Mossel Bay, when the area was only bush and the political climate uncertain.
Santos Haven honours each and every one of them.

It was a pleasure being served by the assistants in their fancy dress costumes.
